The most southerly and arguably the sunniest, of the islands in the Ionian chain, Zakynthos ( also known as Zante) has absorbed much of the culture of its many invaders and rulers over the year, which gives it it’s unique cosmopolitan feel with more than a little Italian influence ( from the many years under Venetian rule) but also from French governors and a brief spell under the British.
Zakynthos is an ideal villa holiday destination for many reasons. Apart from fantastic beaches and gorgeous clear sea it offers a very pretty main town with excellent shopping and dining options, “fun” resorts for those who require a bit of nightlife and good bars and even a small water park, secluded sleepy hideaways for those who don’t. The Gerekos beach is the protected area given over to the nesting areas of the Mediterranean sea turtle. Beautiful pine woods and stunning scenery plus an airport that is well served from most of the UK airports and a short onward journey to your villa in most cases.
